The Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) salutes all those who served in Vietnam during the period of the Vietnam War, from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that today there are more than 7 million U.S. Vietnam veterans living in America and abroad, along with 10 million families of those who served during this timeframe. If you know someone who served in this war, express your thanks and your appreciation for his or her honorable service.

Many of the Vietnam War Veterans are now of an age to be in care of Veterans Affairs hospitals, or even in assisted living facilities. Hundreds of them live in the VLB’s nine Texas State Veterans Homes, which are open to Texas Veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents. Located in Amarillo, Big Spring, Bonham, El Paso, Floresville, Houston, McAllen, Temple and Tyler, they are convenient to anyone in the state.

The Home in Floresville, in the San Antonio metropolitan area, is named for Major Frank M. Tejada, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1967. Tejada later served in the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, and the United States House. During his time in the 103rd Congress, Congressman Tejeda fought for the rights of Veterans by successfully passing legislation to expand educational benefits and health care access for Veterans.

Congress issued a national commemoration of the Vietnam War in 2007, and President Barack Obama made it a presidential proclamation on Memorial Day in 2012. The U.S.A. Vietnam War Commemoration will continue through Veterans Day, November 11, 2025, making this a 13 year celebration of this long conflict. The official website for the Commemoration is at https://www.vietnamwar50th.com, where Vietnam Veterans can find out information about events near them, as well as requesting an official Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin. One interesting thing about the Commemoration is that it considers all those who served during the era of the Vietnam War, from 1955–1975, to be eligible for inclusion in this great event.

The VLB salutes all those who served in Vietnam, and thanks them for their service. We are glad that your sacrifices are now acknowledged by our country.

The VLB is happy to provide any needed help for these American heroes. The mission for the VLB is “to ensure that we offer the very best package of Veterans benefits in the country and those of us who work for the VLB strive to meet those goals every day. For more than 70 years, we have had the honor to serve Veterans, Military Members and their families in Texas, and we look forward to keeping that promise in the years to come.” Call 1–800–252–8387, email VLBinfo@glo.texas.gov, or visit vlb.texas.gov to see the different benefits available.
