They stand at attention against the pale white headstones, a sea of green wreaths with their big red bows. The thousands of holiday wreaths placed this holiday season and every year show our love and respect for the 21,535 souls that rest within our hallowed grounds. The wreaths are placed by friends, family and complete strangers who come to show their respects to the thousands of Veterans buried at the VLB cemeteries. It’s a beautiful site to see.

Despite our differences, Texans of all races, religions, political persuasion and ages come together every year to pay tribute and remember these American patriots who now spend eternity at one of our cemeteries. This holiday season, despite the challenges posed by a pandemic, brought together hundreds of people — from Boy Scouts to leather-clad motorcyclists to seniors — to honor them safely.

The common thread that bonds everyone who comes to the four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries is admiration for those who served our country, preserving our democracy and keeping us free.

The Texas State Veterans Cemeteries are hallowed grounds. Caring for the more than 21,535 souls while conducting new burials every day is a distinct honor carried out with great reverence and love.
