Wednesday, November 11th is a very special and important day, about which the Veterans Land Board shouts to the mountaintops. November 11th is a day when all of us should stop and pay attention to those who have given part of their lives over to a cause bigger than themselves. It is Veterans Day, and every American should recognize this day as a valuable day to thank those who have helped maintain our freedom and our way of life.

Originally, this recognition began as a way to honor our Veterans who served in the Great War, and was known as Armistice Day, since November 11, 1918, was the ending of World War I. However, after World War II, President Eisenhower changed the holiday to honor Veterans of all wars. Since 1954, it has been known as Veterans Day, which is a day dedicated to the living Veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

This day is not to recognize our warrior dead, those who died in service to America. That day is in May and is Memorial Day. Today is to honor those who lived in service to our country and made themselves part of the fabric of America. We can do this with local town parades, with letters to Veterans like the Veterans Land Board Mail-Drop program, with a simple thank you, or the purchase of someone’s meal in a restaurant just because she wore an Operation Iraqi Freedom Vet hat.

Whatever you do on the 11th, please ensure that you somehow honor and respect those who have demonstrated the values of Honor, Duty, and Sacrifice. Veterans gave up something in order to pursue their choice of serving, and when popular culture would encourage them to run away from danger, these are the folks who continue to stand on a wall, protecting us, from the dangers that seek to overcome the ideals of freedom and liberty.

Long may our flag wave over this land, and as long as we have brave men and women who are willing to serve and sacrifice, our flag will continue to lead our country into the future. Happy Veterans Day from the Veterans Land Board, and thank you to all Veterans for your service!
