Texas State Veterans Home Residents Celebrate Love, Life & Laughter
The Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) has eight Texas State Veterans Homes across the state. These homes provide affordable, long-term skilled nursing care for Texas Veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents. They are designed to enhance quality of life with a caring and dignified setting appropriate to those men and women who have served our country with honor.
The staff at our homes work diligently to provide the residents with special activities and celebrations to show them all how much they are loved. Here are a just a few of the events, activities and celebrations that took place this past January and February.
Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home
In January, the Top Wings Motorcycle Club of Amarillo, a local chapter of the Gold Wing Road Rider’s Association, donated $500 to the Resident Spending Fund at the Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo. Top Wings holds fundraisers throughout the year for our Veterans. The residents were able to buy a 72” smart TV and sound bar for the great room. The TV was installed just in time to watch the NCAAF Champion Game between Alabama and Georgia and everyone had a great time! A big shout out to Top Wings of Amarillo for their passion for our residents!
West Texas A&M University provided tickets for Ussery Roan and VA Community Living Center Veterans to attend the basketball game on February 15th at the West Texas A&M Event Center in Canyon, Texas.

Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home
On Tuesday, February 13, the residents and staff at the Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham celebrated Mardi Gras with a parade.
Brave, a miniature horse from Mini Encounters, visited the residents to wish them a very Happy Valentine’s Day. ❤️️

Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home
On Tuesday, February 13, ROTC students from El Paso High School paid a visit to our residents at the Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso.

Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home
The residents at the Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville enjoyed pizza, hot wings, chips and dip, and drinks as they cheered on their favorite teams on Superbowl Sunday. Most predicted accurately that the Philadelphia Eagles would win!
Employees from the local Whataburger delivered Valentine goodies including cookies, candy and cards for our residents on Valentine’s Day!
The Frank M. Tejeda Veterans Home invited spouses, and the residents of two other local long term care facilities for a luncheon that included a heart-shaped cornbread!

Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home
On Tuesday, January 9, Araceli Aguilar was crowned Team Member of the Month at the Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen.
On Wednesday, February 28, residents and staff enjoyed a performance by the Paul Pagel Band.

William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home
On Wednesday, February 7, the Texas State Veterans Home in Temple and the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) hosted a Legacy Women Veterans Recognition Luncheon to honor their six women Veteran residents. The guest speaker was Shawn Debay, the Program Operations Director for TVC, and Anna Baker, the TVC Women Veterans Program Manager, presented certificates of recognition.
On Wednesday, February 7, residents and staff in the Memory Support Unit got in the loving mood by making Valentine’s Day crafts!

Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home
On Tuesday, January 16, a rare snowfall happened at the Texas State Veterans Home in Tyler. Everything was so beautiful and serene.
“Our thanks and appreciation to KVNE Radio for visiting our Veterans on Valentine’s Day and delivering bags of handmade Valentine cards,” said Donna Huffman, On Site Representative for the Watkins-Logan Veterans Homes. “This has become an annual event that everyone looks forward to. They will enjoy these special cards as they realize that they are loved and supported by so many.” ❤️️
Many thanks to the Angel Chefs of Flint Baptist Church who come to the Watkins-Logan Veterans Home every Valentine’s Day to prepare a very special Sweetheart Luncheon for the residents.
Three couples were crowned King and Queen for Valentine’s Day this year. Kris, the home’s social worker, brought her dog Bella. Long live the Kings and Queens!

Because the VA subsidizes much of a Veteran’s cost to stay at a VLB Texas State Veterans Home, daily out-of-pocket rates are well below average and include the cost of medications for Veterans. Residents can choose between a spacious private or semi-private room based upon availability. Alzheimer’s units at each home provide highly specialized care, including beautifully landscaped, secure courtyards. Like all VLB programs, the Texas State Veterans Homes are self-supporting and cost Texas taxpayers virtually nothing.
