Texas State Veterans Homes Celebrate Spring
The Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) has eight Texas State Veterans Homes across the state. These homes provide affordable, long-term skilled nursing care for Texas Veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents. They are designed to enhance quality of life with a caring and dignified setting appropriate to those men and women who have served our country with honor.
The staff at our homes go the extra mile every day to provide the residents with special activities and celebrations to show them all how much they are loved. Here are a just a few of the events that have taken place this past March and April.
Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Home
On March 17, the Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo celebrated both St. Patrick’s Day and the 100th Anniversary of the first female to enlist in the military. They gave special recognition to three women Veteran residents who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and the Facility Director of Nursing, Jackie Hendrick, and Business Office Manager, Stephanie Leet Hall, who are also Veterans.
On Friday, April 21, the residents at the home received 12 new wheelchairs from the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26. This DAV chapter has raised a total of $3000 for the purchase of 15 wheelchairs for the residents. There were five members of the Chapter here, including our Director of Nursing, Jackie Hendrick, who is a member of the Chapter. There was a small reception with a cake presented to them in gratitude for their generosity.
Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home
On Sunday, April 16, the Texas State Veterans Home in Big Spring celebrated Easter with a BBQ and egg hunt for the residents and their families.
Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home
On Thursday, March 30, Bernice Humphries celebrated her 101st birthday at the Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham. On Wednesday, April 5, the Dodd City First Baptist Church Children’s Department and Youth Group visited the home to deliver decorated sacks full of goodies and snacks for the residents. On Tuesday, April 11, the extremely talented United States Army Field Band visited and played several patriotic songs for the residents.
Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home
The staff and residents at the Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso got their green on for St. Patrick’s Day!
Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home
On April 5, he residents of the Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville were entertained with an amazing performance by Re-Creation. This is a group of young people who volunteer an entire year of their lives to travel the country bringing quality entertainment to Veterans. Their show was entitled “School Days!” and included popular American songs, dancing, and rousing patriotic music. It was very touching to see the Veterans singing along, saluting throughout the program, and even crying at times.
The staff, residents and their families also celebrated Easter with a a party and an Easter Egg hunt.
Alfredo Gonazalez Texas State Veterans Home
The Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen celebrated Easter with egg hunts and cascarones fights. On Thursday, April 27, the home held a Military Ball. Special thanks go out to the home’s Activities Department, the American Legion Post 37 and the McAllen High School ROTC color guard.
William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home
Staff and residents at the Texas State Veterans Home in Temple celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with Scotty Ray’s Blast from the Past show and In Country MC. A great time was had by all!
There are Texas State Veterans Homes in Amarillo, Big Spring, Bonham, El Paso, Floresville, McAllen, Temple and Tyler. A ninth home is currently being constructed in Houston.
Because the VA subsidizes much of a Veteran’s cost to stay at a VLB Texas State Veterans Home, daily out-of-pocket rates are well below average and include the cost of medications for Veterans. Residents can choose between a spacious private or semi-private room based upon availability. Alzheimer’s units at each home provide highly specialized care, including beautifully landscaped, secure courtyards. Like all VLB programs, the Texas State Veterans Homes are self-supporting and cost Texas taxpayers virtually nothing.
