Janice Bradley, WWII US Army Veteran and VLB’s Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home resident, turned 100 on Dec. 3. All she wanted for her birthday was cards.

Janice opened more than 1,070 birthday cards from all over the country. Every state was represented, including a handful from Hawaii. Three cards made the long journey from Peru and Great Britain. She was humbled by cards from school children. They were candid, creative and none were alike — all hand-made and very original!

During her party with her friends, Janice reflected on the impact the cards had on her. “I am just overwhelmed by the kindness people have shown by taking the time to send well wishes to a total stranger… that’s just unreal” she said.

Janice also received cards from the following officials:

  • Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush
  • U. S. Senator John Cornyn
  • U.S. Congressmen K. Michael Conaway, Bill Flores, Van Taylor, and Louie Gohmert
  • McAllen Mayor Jim Darling, who hand-delivered a card and a gift bag from him and his staff

Janice also received gifts from the following officials:

  • GLO Commissioner George P. Bush sent a proclamation and a GLO commemorative medallion
  • U.S. Senator Ted Cruz sent a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol with two certificates and a letter from the senator and his wife
  • U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez sent a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol with a certificate and card
  • Gov. Gregg Abbott sent a proclamation
  • Texas State Rep. Bobby Guerra sent a certificate of recognition
  • San Juan Mayor Mario Garza sent a proclamation

Janice appreciated the plaque hand-delivered by Pastor Cunningham and his wife along with a card signed by the entire church congregation. She was touched that they traveled all the way from East Texas. Janice had the plaque placed right over her bed’s headboard.
