Frontend JavaScript frameworks

Simply put, a JavaScript framework is a set of tools that helps developers create web applications.

Now, what does that mean in practice?

You can think of Javascript frameworks (such as Angular, React, Vue.js) as the set of tools you would use to build a house. Sure, you could use your bare hands to tear down trees in order to get the wood you need, but using an axe allows you to speed up this dull task so you can focus on actually building the house.

Cutting down trees with your bare hands is neither fun nor the best use of your time

Similarly, a JavaScript framework provides the axe to build your website, along with a shovel and a pickaxe.

How did these tools come to be? With the advent of complex web apps like Gmail, front-end developers (these are the people making what you see in your browser) needed tools to help them manage that increased complexity and still remain productive. This is where JavaScript frameworks came in. They gave front end developers the tools to help them build websites and applications faster and in a cleaner way.

Today, there are 3 big JavaScript frameworks:

  • Angular, developed by Google
  • React, developed by Facebook
  • Vue.js, developed by Evan You

These 3 frameworks mostly solve the same problems, but in vastly different ways. So ultimately, the choice between the 3 often comes down to a developer’s personal tastes.
