Reggie is a highly-driven tech recruiter, actively engaged in the sourcing community and who loves sharing his knowledge.
His journey into tech recruitment began six years ago. He describes the beginning as challenging, especially since he had the idea that it was necessary to have extensive knowledge of software development to be successful. It took him some time to realise that it was not his responsibility to decide whether or not the developers had the right technical skills. Today, he does not judge candidates on their technical abilities but focuses on how they fit with the companies’ team(s) and the company culture.
Reggie shares his best tips to the younger self during the talk. Here is some of his top advice:
1. Patience is key. Be patience with success, relationship building and candidates. Constantly giving your 110% will not always be beneficial. It is okay if candidates are not ready to take the step towards a new job. It will only be more valuable to you and others to stay patient.
2. Build strong and long-lasting relationships with candidates. Be friendly & build trust. Put emphasis on personal conversations and show your interest in how and what their life is like. He says that “by showing a lot of interest in what they do and asking questions and doing research. It’s really about getting trust”. Recruiters need to build trust to be more effective.
3. Be passionate. It is not only about you, or the number of hires you make in the end. Keep in mind that you have the ability to help people find a job that impacts their life remarkably and everything else will follow. Again, patience is key but remember, in the end, you need to have fun and love what you do!
