The exhibit : “Made in the Americas” at the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) really sings. It’s comprised of pieces inspired by the East for sale in the Americas as well as Western-made items reflecting the Chinoiserie spirit, all before 1800. What craftsmanship. Here’s just a detail of a colonial tapestry from Peru using the locally sourced cochineal.

My favorite fashion of the trip is from the Peabody Museum at Harvard, a hundred year old suit of armor from the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific made from coconut fiber, sharks’ teeth and a repurposed porcupine fish helmet!
