The Back of All the Trucks Passed While Driving from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, California, Sunday 20 January, 1963.
Baldessari made this work during a single day in 1962. In this period he drove every day to the cliff area by La Jolia to paint whatever caught his attention. The Works became increasingly abstract, and he began to notice objects around him which resembled areas of these paintings. He began to photograph outdoor surfaces, such as the backs of trucks, using these snapshots as sources for new paintings, which in turn suggested new photographs. This is one of the few works which Baldessari did not destroy when he rejected painting enterily in 1970. Instead he exhibited the photographs no longer as a ‘study’ for a painting but as an independent work.
