Now in its second year, the TezAsia Hackathon acts as a launchpad for start-up teams and developers looking to build game-changing web3 solutions on the Tezos blockchain.

Setting a precedent for driving innovation-based culture in the Web3 arena, Tezos India and TZ APAC have co-organised the month-long TezAsia Hackathon, spanning the entire Asia-Pacific region. Registrations are open, and applications are being rolled out for the hackathon, which begins on July 10th. TezAsia is a Web3 hackathon that welcomes aspiring newcomers, advanced coders, students, professionals, and blockchain enthusiasts. Participants stand a chance to win $100,000 in prizes and an additional $100,000 in early-stage grants. The hackathon opens up opportunities to work with the best dApps, platforms, mentors and Tezos-based entities in the ecosystem. To kickstart the registration process (open until July 10th), the team behind the hackathon has utilised the Unstop platform. Aspiring candidates can register themselves for free individually or in teams of four members.

Themes to center on scale and innovation

Candidates can choose amongst two themes — ‘Small but great’ and ‘Disrupt all the things’- or from a wide range of tracks. Among the themes, the former focuses on building a simple dApp on the Tezos blockchain, and the latter allows for teams with a disruptive vision to showcase a POC/MVP of their dream Web3 product.

Candidates can also find a detailed list of ideas on the platform to increase their chances of winning in each category. There have been around 11,700 registrations to date, an astonishing c. 700% increase on last year’s total of 1,422 registrations.

According to Om Malviya, President of Tezos India, the TezAsia Hackathon is a one-size-fits-all moment for people to enter and contribute to the Tezos ecosystem through a spectrum of activities mentored by global leaders.

“It will be a defining moment for those aspiring students and enthusiasts with the singular goal of learning and achieving massive heights in their lives,” he said.

Commenting on the hackathon, Katherine Ng, newly appointed Managing Director of TZ APAC, said: “With its young, digitally-native, and ambitious population, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing rapid Web3 adoption across NFT and crypto wallet ownership in Asia”.

“As of last year, almost half of the global crypto market capitalisation is based in the APAC region, which has given rise to some of the industry’s up-and-coming projects and established unicorns.”

A schedule packed with collaboration and mentorship

Beginning on July 10th with a kick-off webinar, the hackathon features extensive 7-day workshops, held until July 20th, followed by a building and mentoring session from July 21st to August 5th. The workshops will take developers through building a dApp from end-to-end on Tezos and explain each step of development from learning Tezos’ smart contract language to token standards, several integration libraries, and the Tezos blockchain more generally.

Participants will also explore interesting ideas and lessons about building projects on Tezos through content and resource sharing. Lastly, the participants will submit their final projects between August 5th and August 12th, when the official evaluation phase is due to take place.

Creating impact

The discovery of women-led businesses and opportunities has always been a challenge especially when it comes to funding and matching with the right investors.

Hence, there’s a special track for Women in Tech (WIT) which focuses on building a crypto equity crowdfunding platform — similar to licensed ECF platforms like Kickstarter — to create a marketplace that focuses on women-led or women empowerment businesses.

The winner of this track will get a reward of $10,000.

Beyond prizes, candidates can expect to grab some face time with blockchain-focused VCs, who will be attending pitches to hear what entrants have to say and examine the problems they are trying to solve in greater detail. A detailed description of prize and grant money is available on the Unstop platform.
