What are testnet tokens?
Testnet tokens are used for interacting with smart contracts and dApps on testnets, and as such have no fiat value. The current active testnets on Tezos are Carthagenet, Delphinet, and Edonet. Carthagenet will stop being active soon due to the recently implemented upgrade Delphi. As the Edo update is currently being proposed, the Edo testnet will be the future active testnet if the upgrade is implemented. For this walk through, I’ll be using the Carthagenet testnet but it will work the same way with any network.

Remember, only the Mainnet tokens have fiat value. For example, on the Mainnet you may have 500 Tez which can be used to transact and interact with real world dApps, but on the Delphinet, you can have 1,000 Tez which is used only for pre-launch and testnet applications. This 1,000 Tez on Delphinet has no real world fiat value.

As seen above, when using the Carthage testnet, I have 90.923 Tez (which is more than enough) but on Mainnet I only have 1.4 Tez (as seen below).

Now, let’s get you some testnet tokens into your wallet!
The easiest way to receive Tezos testnet tokens is through Baking Bad’s Telegram bot. If you don’t have Telegram, you can install it here. Once you have Telegram installed, either on the desktop or mobile, go to the bot here. Click “Get Coins” as shown below.

Click the “🤑 Get coins” button on the bottom left

When prompted, input your TZ address and you’ll receive 100 Tez to be used on Carthagenet, Delphinet, and Edonet. Happy Buidl-ing!
