Having read in the Guardian this morning about Bermuda repealing same-sex marriage, I am FUCKING pissed off.
Bermuda becomes first country in world to repeal same-sex marriage
British island territory swaps marriage for domestic partnerships for LGBT couples in move criticised as attack on…
Think you know why? I think I’m going to surprise you with my answer.
If you don’t want to be pissed off or have your deep-seated beliefs challenged, stop reading, now.
In my humble opinion, marriage is a box, an institution that comes with ridiculous rules, bondage, and unrealistic expectations.
Do we need the institution of marriage as it exists today?
We need something else and here’s why.
What was the original purpose of marriage?
Ownership and progeny.
The foundation of marriage is built upon bondage. We are maintaining an institution that makes no sense in today’s society, other than to signal privilege and belonging.
Look back to Roman times when the man of the household owned property, which included his wife, children, and slaves. THAT is where marriage comes from. It is rooted in ownership.
Some will argue that the bible says marriage is between a man and a woman
If you believe what is written in the bible is true, you might as well believe that everything written in Homer’s Iliad is also true.
We can find historical facts in both books, but there’s much more we can’t substantiate.
Just because you believe in the bible, doesn’t make it true. Besides, you can’t believe in a book. It’s there in your hands, so it’s perceivably real.
The bible is not something you can trust.
There are more versions of the bible than makes logical sense. The bible is a collection of stories passed down through oral tradition and written on long-lost scrolls.
The bible contains historical stories about a society that no longer exists. A society that was based upon a dominant ruling class and absolute patriarchy. Women had no rights. Slaves had no rights. In fact, dogs had more freedom than women.
While we have evolved (somewhat) we can’t live our lives and build our society upon something that was written at a time that was a very different world than what we have now.
What was law once, may not apply today.
Passages in the old testament of Leviticus, 18 & 20 “suggest” men should not lay with other men (1) and can be interpreted historically as such:
At that time the Jewish people needed to expand their tribe so they proclaimed an edict (whether that was a law of the people or someone claimed it came from god) in order to procreate and make more babies.
Fast forward to 1930’s Germany. Hitler outlaws abortion (2) to keep making babies for the Arian race and the war machine.
Sound in any way, in the smallest way similar?
I’ll answer that for you: IT IS THE FUCKING SAME THING!
If (which it isn’t) the bible is the “word of god” why are there so many versions?
One religious variant doesn’t include one part of the bible, while another includes it. Some religions only speak from the old testament, ignoring the loving kindness of the new testament.
You simply don’t get to pick and choose to make a new fucking religion!
There is as much conflicting information in the bible as there is fake news today.
The bible is based upon scant written records and Dead Sea Scrolls that don’t tell the whole picture. Like any manuscript copied by hand, variations and mistakes show up with each copy.
How we translate something from 2,000 years ago into today’s language is problematic at best.
The word “homosexual” doesn’t exist in the bible:
“The English word homosexual is a compound word made from the Greek word homo, meaning “the same”, and the Latin term sexualis, meaning sex. The term “homosexual” is of modern origin, and it wasn’t until about a hundred years ago that it was first used. There is no word in biblical Greek or Hebrew that is equivalent to the English word homosexual.” (3)
The only miracle I can see in relation to the bible is that people believe in a hackneyed text that has been pulled together from scraps of parchment over thousands of years by countless different people.
How can this, then, be even remotely considered the word of god? There is no consistency!
What are the alternatives to the institution of marriage?
The abolishment of the institution, once and for all.
In it’s place, enact humane rights for all couples, whether they be gay, straight, lesbian, trans, polyamorous, and so on.
No more division, no more separation, and no more polarity of gender as the foundation of a corrupt, institutionalized union.
Individuals may choose to come together in a union that serves the health, happiness, and wellbeing of their unit.
Provide them with the protections for making important life choices, such as having children together, medical care, final wishes, etc.
Let religions have their marriage as a tradition, but require them to allow all partnership possibilities to marry (not just a man and a woman), and to have the same rights and privileges I’ve described above.
No more of this one-sided, exclusivity bullshit.
What would you do?
How do we fix this outdated, archaic, privileged, heteronormative institution? Or do we abolish entirely?
