Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Valentine’s Day is coming —
what are you going to do?

You’re going to tell anyone and everyone you can that your organization LOVES them and make Cupid’s holiday work. for. you. The real question is — what kind of Valentine are you?

The Traditional Valentine.

You know the drill. Candles, flowers, candy — and saying thank you to your donors, honoring your married alumni, and educating students on the impact alumni philanthropy has on campus each day.

Married Alumni
They met and fell in love on your campus. In this scenario, your organization is the match maker! Who wouldn’t want to hear from the organization responsible for their happily ever after?

This feature of a pair of University of Tennessee alumni who met at a football tailgate and will wed at the same stadium is perfect for sharing with the greater alumni community — especially married alumni!
WCU has a whole campaign, dubbed #WCUSweethearts where they share stories of how alumni couples met.

The Modern Valentine.

You’re tired of tradition. You refuse to buy flowers because it’s too sad to watch them wilt away and die. What you’re looking for is a way stand out.

Take a page out of the book of Leslie Knope, the main character of the series Parks and Recreation who is credited with creating Galentine’s Day, a holiday that celebrates female empowerment and is observed the day before Valentine’s Day.

Women (and all the causes on your campus that support or celebrate women).
This is an opportunity to cut through the clutter and bring a new angle to an old appeal.

Celebrate female alumni by highlighting features, interviews, or simple shout outs on social media. Encourage gifts to women’s athletics teams. Focus your attention on women’s centers or academic programs on campus.

And be sure to eat some waffles.

UMass Dartmouth rewrote the traditional love note to focus on their female led clubs, athletics programs, women’s studies department, and more!
Sonderlust created a campaign for Galentine’s Day called SonderLOVE where they encouraged $14 gifts to an agency dedicated to preventing sexual assault and violence against women.

The DIY Valentine.

If you’re more into the homegrown approach, ThankView has you covered with tons of themed envelopes and brand new video frames to overlay as you record your personalized Valentines.

Current Donors
Take time to say thanks to your loyal donors, your first-time donors, the lapsed donor who came back to your donor community after a break. Set up grateful stations across campus and preload a campaign with your donor list, using the notes section to add any special prompts to the script.

Then, choose a frame, theme, and envelope based on the options (like the ones below) in the portal!
