That Good You Need Part X

August 11th, 2016

It might not seem that phenomenal, but I am pretty amped up that this is the 10th consecutive edition of That Good You Need. We out here fam!

Before we get into this week’s #content, I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite pieces so far. If you’re interested in going back and seeing some of the best from the first 9, here’s what I recommend:

  1. Chris Sacca on The Bill Simmons Podcast from Part II
  2. Sean Huber’s Jimmy John’s Adventure from Part IV
  3. Obama After Dark: The Precious Hours Alone from Part V
  4. This specific John Cena Hefty Ad from Part VII
They say you can’t see him, but here he is.

5. What Goes Into a Great Convention Speech from Part VIII

Thank you to everyone who unknowingly has contributed such excellent material for me to browse and share and pass along.

More importantly, thank you, the people that read this, talk to me about it, and generally just encourage me to continue. Special thanks to Johnny Naptimes for the love and for the graphic he designed to be the logo for this space.

Pretty dope, thanks Johnny! Please send this to me like, 5 times larger.

And now, That Good You Need.

Six months in: What Sky has learned from VR

Virtual Reality is going to happen. Although it likely isn’t going to take over completely, it will probably be a force to be reckoned with within the next few years. This will become especially true once the technology that makes it immersive becomes more accessible to consumers.

That’s why it’s smart to begin researching when, where, and how to use VR now, so that you’re ahead of the curve in when it really begins taking off. There are some great lessons here and I would say that even in my limited work with VR, I’ve personally found all of these to be true.

A Week In NYC On A $240,000 Salary

Courtesy of Refinery29

This is one of a series that Refinery29 is doing on money. While it is one of the highest salaries in the series, it’s not the salary that is most interesting here.

No, that distinction goes to the fact that even on a salary of almost a quarter of a million dollars most of this woman’s meals are reimbursed. You certainly can’t blame her for being in this situation, in fact being a lawyer in New York at age 29 shows that she’s likely worked pretty hard in her life, but this is the kind of practice that would astound many individuals who aren’t around this kind of environment. I’m sure, though, that she could share stories about her superiors and the people in those circles that equally astound her. It just goes to show you, it’s all relative.

Also, credit where credit is due, she contributes about $400 — $500 a month to charity. Obviously, that is pretty generous.

How NFL Teams Spend Their Money

Courtesy of The Ringer

Speaking of budgeting, this piece does a nice job of breaking down how NFL teams are throwing cash around these days. The answer, more or less, depends on who you have playing quarterback and how far along in their career they are.

By the way, this carries through the “it’s all relative” thread pretty well. Casually reading about how people in their mid-20’s make in the mid-$20M’s and just accepting it puts some perspective on the previous story.

Trump Presidential Diary

And the home of the brave

There’s obviously been an enormous amount of Trump satire, but this is particularly well done. Short, quick, to the point, right to the satire part, and very, very close to the Donald’s voice. Shout out to Ryan Cunningham for this one.

Some quick examples:

You can imagine him taking a Presidential Honeymoon
Cannot wait for the Trump NCAA bracket segment on SportsCenter

Is The Night Of Trolling Us?????

Courtesy of Kyle

Full disclosure, this is something I wrote myself. Still, I wanted to make sure I shared it.

While The Night Of has given us some great television over the past month or so, it also continually makes you scratch your head and wonder what on Earth is going on in some of these scenes. Long story short, they trollin’!

That does it for Part X! As always please recommend, comment, critique, and let me know if there’s some interesting content I should check out. I’m off to write a thought piece about how all these Arthur Memes are changing 538’s election forecast!
