“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”

Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

When was the last time you got lost in a book?

A really good fantasy or science fiction that’s just enough removed from our every day world to allow you to escape for a bit. Those are my favorite.

It’s interesting to consider how much of the truly fantastical story lines are actually real, though. Who did JK Rowling base Harry Potter after? Or Voldemort? Or Dumbledore?

Writers take in their surroundings and place them in their stories whether they know it or not. It’s odd to consider a relationship between reading for escapism and reading something with real world connections, as the two seem to violently oppose each other.

But it’s important to think about the roots of the story and pay credit to the stories, people, places, cultures that the writer was brave enough to find writable with enough imagination.

Write about a writable moment today.

If you’re a fiction writer: how does your main characters world overlap with your world? Where did you draw your inspiration from? How important are those real world elements to your character and their story?
