How to Finally Finish Writing That Novel You Started Six Years Ago

Okay, fine. That novel ‘I’ started six years ago. But maybe my own tough love will help you, too.

Let’s say you have this story that’s been living in your brain for six years. For six whole years it’s been half-written, half-planned, half-finished. Just kind of half-everything, you know?

The characters have taken up residence. They are real people with real problems and real personalities. And for six years you’ve thought real hard about telling their story.

But you haven’t done it. Not completely. You got about 40,000 words in an stalled.

Full-disclosure here: the word ‘you’ is totally code for ‘I.’

I have a story that I’ve been living with for six years. I need to finish writing it already. And as I sit here thinking about why I’m struggling so hard with that, I thought it might be useful to share with you some insight into why we do this to ourselves.

And how we break out of the cycle and actually write the damn book already.

Short answer

You finish that novel you started six years ago by adding to your first draft every single day until you’re done.
