Though it can be confusing, right? I’m here to guide you through the process. Let’s start!

Both. Neither. One at a time? Most writers won’t even consider marketing a book that doesn’t exist yet. Cart before the horse, etc., right? How can we market something that doesn’t exist?

Eh, not so fast. See, YOU exist. You, the writer. The blogger. The human being that’s alive and able to interact with other human beings. And that’s where we start. We market you, Author X.

One of my mantras, as both a book marketer and author, is this:

We brand the author, not only the book.

So, what does that even mean? No, we’re not talking about burning something into your skin, so let’s set aside those tired jokes. Branding isn’t some 1950s Mad Men concept, either. It’s pretty simple, really.

Defining Branding

What interests you? What are you good at? What do you want to be good at?

Tip: these topics may or may not have anything at all to do with the subject matter of your book (most likely they do, in that we usually write about something we know or have researched extensively). And yes, this works for fiction, regardless of genre, as well as non-fiction.
