BINGE WATCH

Tia Mowry and Loretta Devine have a multi-generational family comedy coming to Netflix, and the series is going to have an all Black writer’s room. Family Reunion has already been given a 20-episode order. It’s created and executive produced by Meg Deloatch, writer and producer of numerous family-centric shows including Family Matters, Malcolm & Eddie, and Raven’s Home. The show centers on Mowry’s character, Cocoa McKellan, and her family as they travel from the big city of Seattle to small town Columbus, Georgia for a family reunion, and things, as they always do with families, gets dysfunctional. Devine plays the matriarch of the McKellan family, M’Dear. Said Netflix’s VP of Kids and Family Melissa Cobb, “Meg DeLoatch has created a warm, funny and memorable extended family that we believe will resonate with audiences around the world and she has assembled an incredibly talented all Black writers’ room to authentically portray these characters and their journey.”

BIG BUSINESS

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood has opened an investigation into Helios and Matheson, the parent company of MoviePass, for potentially misleading investors. The investigation falls under the Martin Act, which is an anti-fraud law considered one of the strictest in the country. If instances of fraud are uncovered, Helios and Matheson could be facing a lot more than just the smoldering pile of money that has become MoviePass. The company could, in a worse case scenario, be facing civil or criminal charges. Helios and Matheson said, “We are aware of the New York Attorney General’s inquiry and are fully cooperating. We believe our public disclosures have been complete, timely and truthful and we have not misled investors. We look forward to the opportunity to demonstrate that to the New York Attorney General.” Helios and Matheson has reportedly lost over $125 million through MoviePass alone.
