BINGE WATCH

FX has scored development for an anthology series referred to as a “feminist Black Mirror.” The series, Her Body and Other Parties, is based on Carmen Maria Machado’s short story collection of the same name. Each episode explores “psychologically vivid tales of women’s fears and desires on landscapes of horror, fabulism, and wild-haired absurdity.” It’s penned by Gina Welch, writer and co-producer of FX’s Feud, who will also executive produce with Imagine Television’s Brian Grazer, Fracie Calfo, and Samie Falvey. Machado will produce. The source material received numerous literary awards including National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize, the Bard Fiction Prize, and the Shirley Jackson Award. It was also a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction.

YOUNG MONEY

Lyft rolled out its monthly subscription service. For $299 a month, the All-Access Plan will get you 30 rides worth of motion sickness — as long as the rides aren’t worth more than $15. If you go over that $15 mark, you’ll get a 5% discount on the difference. If you’re trying to get the service for a scooter or a bike — first, what are you doing? Just buy a bike or a scooter. It’s cheaper. Second, you can’t. The service is only for single-passenger or shared rides. The service is targeting commuters or people in cities that don’t have cars and are too good for public transportation.

BIG BUSINESS

Sorry to break it to you, but your local coffee shop is preventing rich music execs from getting richer. Thanks to small businesses streaming music on ye old Spotify instead of licensing their sweet acoustic guitar melodies, the music industry lost $2.65 billion in 2017. This is according to Nielsen Music, which interviewed over 5,000 business owners in the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. Nielsen estimates that around 29 million small businesses stream music in their stores, with 88% playing music every day. However, 21 million of those are doing so without business streaming licenses. In case you didn’t know (I sure didn’t), current copyright law requires that places of business and public venues obtain a license to stream music legally. Business owners don’t know this either. Of the American owners Nielsen surveyed, 71% said they didn’t know it was required to obtain a license to stream music.
