BINGE WATCH

Friday the 13th is also getting the reboot treatment, and it’s looking like LeBron James will produce it. Yes, you read that correctly. The NBA star/Sprite spokesman will reportedly be working with Vertigo Entertainment, one of the studios behind the popular 2017 revival of It. If you’re wondering what the heck James is doing in this mix, have no fear. According to the A.V. Club, James is a massive horror fan who once dressed as Pennywise for Halloween so he’s VERY. QUALIFIED. In all seriousness though, this is far from James’ first venture into producing. He’s currently attached to — and buckle up for this:

  • The remake of House Party
  • A Space Jam sequel
  • His barbershop-based talk show The Shop
  • YouTube Premium docuseries Best Shot
  • Facebook Watch series I Am More: OBJ about the New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr.

And that’s just to name a few. Hard to believe that James is managing to continue being one of the biggest stars in the league while managing this insane lineup (which TBH only scratches the surface of his entire commitment list) at the same time.

YOUNG MONEY

Time to push MoviePass out of the nest of insanity. Helios and Matheson has announced that it will be spinning the movie subscription service off into a separate entity called MoviePass Entertainment Holdings. Helios and Matheson noted that the new company will be publicly traded. According to CEO Ted Farnsworth, this decision, among several factors, comes from the synonymity Helios and Matheson has taken to MoviePass since it acquired the service last December. To soften the blow (maybe? HMNY’s stock is currently sitting at a painful ~$0.02) Helios and Matheson actually plans to distribute some outstanding shares of the new company’s common stock to Helios and Matheson shareholders as a dividend. If you’ve even looked at a single headline or read a Facebook status from your trendy aunt over the last few months, you know MoviePass has been bleeding money, leading it to increase subscription plan prices and forcing its parent company to issue reverse split stocks to try to get things back on the rails.

BIG BUSINESS

Reddit has teamed up with Patreon to help creators better beg for money — I mean “build community.” This partnership will primarily play out through integrations that make Patreon options of creators more visible in their personal subreddits. It also allows Redditors to enable a Patreon badge next to their usernames so creators can see who’s paying their bills. If the internet plays its cards right, this could lead to enhanced interaction between superfans and creators. It’s a natural fit, especially in the gaming world, where many creators already use personal subreddits to interact with fans/plan world domination.
