We attended this year’s ICE London Awards Event and saw some amazing projects receive some well-deserved awards! The event itself was held at the stunning ICE HQ @OGGSVenue and was a chance to bring some of London’s leading civil engineers together ahead of the Spring Bank holiday weekend.

The ICE London Graduate and Students Committee welcomed over 250 attendees and ushered guests into the Great Hall — one of the locations used by @BBCOne to film The Night Manager.

As graduate and student members of the ICE, it was a pleasure to listen to speeches from the ICE London Chair Roland Grzybek, ICE President Sir John Armitt and MP for Kensington, Victoria Borwick recognize the importance of infrastructure to London.

There were six awards up for grabs this year, however there were seven winners! The award winners are profiled below and showcase some extraordinary infrastructure, innovation, community benefit and the ins and outs of civil engineering. And the winners [were]…

Greatest Contribution to London

Thames Water Lee Tunnel Project AND the Lee Tunnel Flow Transfer System

The Lee Tunnel Project and Lee Tunnel Flow Transfer System are the first phase of the biggest upgrade to the sewerage system of London since Victorian times that will, in the next few years, include the Thames Tideway and the consequent environmental clean-up.

If you’re ever in a civil engineering pub quiz you’d be happy to know that the Lee Tunnel is London’s deepest tunnel at 75m below ground! For a sense of scale, the Crossrail tunnels are at a depth of up to 40m, and The Shard’s piles are 55m deep.

Award for Complex Infrastructure

PAL 6 District and Circle Line Underpass, Victoria Station

The judges were impressed by this project as an exemplar of an extraordinarily complex scheme, extremely well-executed with commitment to high standards of technical excellence, collaboration, delivery and health and safety.

The project team were tasked with delivering a step free Victoria station by constructing passenger tunnels (PALs) with this particular tunnel separated by approximately 600mm to the train lines.

Award for Community Impact

Bridget Joyce Square, Australia Road SUDS Scheme

The judges were struck by four things about this scheme, which made it deserving of the award.

The project is an example of how urban regeneration brings benefits to the community with sustainable drainage a core aspect since concept design.

Award for Digital Engineering

LUL applied BIM, VDC and Digital engineering for Baker Street Bond Street Tunnel Remediation

A complex tunnel refurbishment in which London Underground embraced the benefits of digital construction to manage all aspects of a very complex and challenging project.

‘A worldwide first, LUL maintained full tunnel operation while replacing the lining of a 215-meter tunnel segment along London’s Jubilee Line.’ Yep, you read that correctly. — Read more here.

Engineered in London Award

District Hospitals Project Ghana — Dodowa Hospital

The Ghana District Hospitals project is an exemplary illustration of the core values of modern civil engineering.

This project helped relieve an over congested hospital that more than tripled from 13,080 to over 42,000 between 2009 and 2012. The hospital itself was also inaugurated by the President of Ghana, John Mahama. How about that for an impact!

Evening Standard People’s Choice Award

Tennison Bridge Road

The scheme saw the successful replacement of a road bridge over 10 rail lines in Croydon, opening to the public in June 2015. The scheme demolished an existing 9 span bridge, with a new single span structure constructed in its place.

The people loved it and so do we. Let’s just say that they make installing a 565 tonne bridge over 10 operational rail lines look easy. Check out the time lapse for yourself: ONE IMPRESSIVE BRIDGE INSTALLATION

And that’s it! Congratulations to all the winners at the ICE London Awards Ceremony 2016 from everyone on the ICE London G&S! See you all next year and have fun out there! Well, not too much fun…
