Jennifer Streaks & Thrive!… Affordably
Educating our people to be financially responsible

When people think about plans for February and March, they often imagine cold temperatures, Valentine’s Day and possibly spring break.
For me, February and March only means one thing: tax refund season.
I was one of those people who couldn’t wait for the day I would receive my first tax refund and buy that purse I’ve had my eye on or a pair of shoes that just went on sale at Nordstrom.
However, I quickly learned that blowing your tax refund, and any other money you receive, is not the way to go. Too many people waste their hard earned money on material things instead of things they actually need.
Jennifer Streaks recognized that people around her weren’t spending their money responsibly and she wanted to use her financial knowledge to fix it. She’s been on numerous television channels like MSNBC and Fox Business discussing year-long financial responsibility and has a Medium blog where she writes about the best moves to make with your tax refund, the best ways for millennials to manage money and much more.
Take a moment to learn more about Jennifer, her book and her future plans.

Why did you decide to write Thrive!… Affordably?
Thrive!… Affordably is a labor of love. I wanted to give readers a tool that would help them get their finances in order. In this day and age, too many people live paycheck to paycheck or are one unexpected emergency away from financial ruin. I also wanted to create something that was user friendly and not overwhelming. I know that with Thrive!… Affordably, I have given the reader an opportunity to develop skills that will make their life better.
What have you had to overcome in order to achieve success?
Achieving success in the financial arena means you really have to buckle down and learn about money. When I was in Corporate America, I worked for some the largest financial services companies in the world, such as KPMG and Legg Mason, as a compliance counsel. It was there that I realized that money fueled everything and the little guy does not have enough of it. I also decided to go back to school and earn an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
What does it mean to be a black business owner & author?
I am constantly saying everyone should have some sort of business, even if it’s a side-hustle. Therefore, having my own thriving venture and book means I am practicing what I preach.
I also believe that being a woman who knows money is important because women are often viewed as unknowledgeable in the area of finances. I hope that I am setting a great example that money management is not too difficult to understand.

What advice do you have for people who are ready to follow their dreams but are hesitating?
If you want to own a business, don’t hesitate and just do it! This has been such a rewarding experience for me as I am truly building my dream. Get out there, do it and don’t let anyone or anything stop you. Keep pushing!
