Proxima Centauri b is an exo-planet of nearby star system just 4.3 light years away from our host planet Earth. It orbits around the M-type red dwarf star Proxima Centauri — closest neighbor to the Yellow dwarf Sun of our solar system. Proxima Centauri b or Proxima b was discovered on 24 August 2016 and often categorized as super Earth due to its huge mass and similarities with blue planet. It’s presence within the habitable zone is still not definitive. Because it orbits around its star at a distance of just 7,500,000 km and subjected to 2000 times high wind pressure as of Earth.

Its similarities with the Earth is intriguing to scientific community. But our technological disadvantage is limiting us to further explore the tantalizing secrets of distant possibly habitable exo-planets.

Scientists are developing new ways to touch the surface of distant exo-planets including Proxima b. Starshot project is a research and engineering project by the Breakthrough Initiatives to develop a breakthrough propulsion and space transportation system i.e. light sail spacecraft named Spaceprobe, to be capable of making the journey to the Alpha Centauri star system 4.37 light-years away.
