Last year, my friend Jon and I started a blog on Medium called The JT Lit Review. On Monday, Jon published an essay entitled “On ‘Stoner’ and the Good Life.” Here is a snippet:

There is another aphorism: “God writes straight with crooked lines.” People often take this to mean we will always get where we need to be, no matter how long or how arduous the journey. But I’m not sure that’s the correct way to read this statement. As free beings, we can resist God. He can pull at us — the straight line — but we can pull away. Our zigzagging movements create the crooked line.

When I go to sleep at night, there is no doubt in my mind that I will wake up the next morning and go through the monotonous routine of getting ready for work. I am not thinking about possibly becoming “collateral damage” of a military operation. I am not thinking about possibly becoming a victim of a chemical weapon attack. Sadly, it is a luxury to receive a notification on my phone with the headline “Suspected gas attack in Syria reportedly kills dozens.”

If you have nine minutes to spare, give both essays a read. And if you might, let us know what you think!
