Footprints.
Footprints are left in the earth in the places you’ve passed. Footprints remind you of where you’ve been.
The boy walked through the grass, leaving his footprints as depressions in the greenery. The air chilled around him. Soon his found himself leaving his footprints in the lightly fallen snow. He stopped walking and turned toward the endless blue beyond the plains. A tear rolled down his cheek.
He didn’t want to remember. He ran his hand through his hair. The blood was still wet.
He didn’t want to remember, but he must.
Winter had finally come to the plains.
