How to Become a Genius From Watching YouTube Videos

YouTube is one of the greatest search engines in the world. Chances are, if you want to know how to do something, you can find out how on YouTube.

In 2019, you can literally learn how to do anything on YouTube. From gardening a plant to making a medium rare steak, to opening a beer with paper (seriously)…whatever you’ve thought of, someone has made a video on it.

YouTube is also a massive, double-edged sword. In one sitting, you can watch six hours of Shopify videos and become an internet entrepreneur who makes $100,000 a month. In another session, you can lower your IQ 100 points by watching nothing but cat videos.

So, how do you control this ridiculously powerful tool, and make it work for you?

1. Sign out of your current YouTube account — YouTube is owned by Google, which means that the G-Suite account you’re currently logged into is likely showing you video previews for a LOT of distracting stuff. If you YouTube’d “How to Zombie Proof My Car”, you will continually get shown useless videos about zombies and cars on your current account. Sign out.
2. Make a new Gmail account — Name it something different than your actual name. Now, the YouTube channel will not have any of your previous, naughty search histories — and will no longer show you ridiculously irrelevant videos that waste your time.
3. Subscribe to the right channels — CGP Grey, In a Nutshell, Vsauce, HowStuffWorks, Brit Lab and THNKR are some of the best videos you can subscribe to.
4. Watch a bunch of their videos — And actually try to enjoy them, because they are genuinely super interesting. What’s happened now is that the YouTube algorithm will understand that this new account likes this type of useful content. YouTube will then search its massively extensive, intuitive keyword recommendation playlist for similar videos. Now, your feed will no longer be filled with cat videos — they will be filled with crazy useful content that will make you smarter.
5. Rinse and repeat — And don’t sign back into your old account!
