Black Writers’ Weekend 2022 is over, but the inspiration still remains. If you missed out on this fabulous weekend, don’t worry. We’ve got you.

Friday — Cre8tive Con

Let’s start off the recap with the most educational event. Creatives from all over the nation descended on the Auburn Avenue Research Library and Constellations for one reason. Cre8tive Con.

The day kicked off with a virtual panel from Harlequin discussing their imprints and publishing process. At Constellations, authors and attendees were able to be interviewed for podcasts and audiobooks.

One of the highlights of the day was Pitch Fest. The annual event is always an attendee favorite. Aspiring authors and filmmakers pitched to publishers and agents, resulting in several authors walking away with deals.

On top of the panels, such as Girl Take Care of You, Access To Hollywood, and Dreaming Out Loud with Tamika Newhouse and B. Simone, those who attended Cre8tive Con were educated with a vast variety of master classes.

The day was filled with entertainment, encouragement, and inspiration that continued into Saturday’s events.

Saturday — Lit Crawl

Two words to describe Lit Crawl are Black Excellence.

The day began with attendees perusing the different vendors and attending several panels and discussions. However, the Lit Crawl had turned into a block party by mid-day. A DJ played all of our favorite throwbacks, jerk chicken and oxtails were being served, and someone broke out the ropes for double-dutch.

It was an experience that fostered networking, knowledge sharing, and connection. From media personalities and undiscovered authors sharing wine to screenplay writers and producers hanging out in the barbershop, the atmosphere was light, festive, and, most importantly, lit.

Authors were able to win free services such as lit consulting, social media assistance, and manuscript reviews by playing games that tested their knowledge of pop culture. Readers were able to connect with their favorite and newly-discovered authors. Creatives received an intimate look into their respective industries and gained knowledge and skill that would take them further.

Black Writers’ Weekend was Lit! It was filled with inspiration, opportunity, and hope. Beautifully put together and hyper-focused on the creatives, BWW is an event in which all creatives should participate. Next year is the fifteenth anniversary and promises to be bigger and better than ever.
