Over the past year or so, Chance the Rapper has proved that he is much more than just a rapper. The Chicago native has proven himself to be quite the philanthropist, especially when it comes to the matters that affect his city such as gun violence and education. In 2014 he, along with his father, promoted the #SaveChicago campaign. The goal of the campaign was to stop gun violence over the Memorial Day Weekend, and it was largely successful as the city went forty-two hours without gunfire. He also worked with President Obama in April 2016 on My Brother’s Keeper Challenge, which is a program from the federal government for civic leaders to address racial inequalities with young men of color.

But it was his dedication to the Chicago Public School System that really showed just how much Chance the Rapper really cares about the education that youth receives in his hometown. In March of this year, he donated $1 million dollars to offset the deficit that the schools did not receive from the federal government. When it was all said and done, he ended up raising $2.2 million for the schools, and announced that twenty schools would receive $100,000 each at the first Social Works Summit.

It was at this very same event that he also announced his plan for the first ever Twilight Awards, which will take place in June 2018 in Chicago and will be hosted by James Corden. The awards ceremony will honor teachers, parents, principals, and students that convey leadership from coast to coast. There will also be special guest performances as well, although the performers have yet to be announced.

With his focus on education and bettering the youth, Chance the Rapper has become a role model not only for his legions of fans but his peers in the hip-hop community as well.
