Kendrick Lamar has been awarded the 2018 Pulitzer prize for his album DAMN! He is the first rapper to ever achieve this prestigious award. Past musicians to win this award were either classical or jazz artists.

Pulitzer describes Lamar’s album as a “Recording released on April 14, 2017, a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”

Lamar’s fans felt he was slighted this year because he did not win a Grammy but the consensus from fans on social media is the Pulitzer will do. Lamar will receive a $15,000 cash reward, a certificate to commemorate his win, and another accolade to add to his resume.
