Nathan “Nearest” Green

You might be familiar with Jack Daniel’s Whiskey brand but it was a black man named Nathan “Nearest” Green who taught Jack Daniel an ancient African technique that filtered liquor through a charcoal mellowing system. This technique is what gives Jack Daniel’s Whiskey its rich flavor and taste. Now you might be familiar with brands such as Diddy’s Ciroc, which grosses $8 million a year, but today the Jack Daniel brand is owned by Brown-Forman Corporation and has a yearly income of $3 Billion. The company is currently trading at $52 a share.

Keith and Fawn Weaver

Fawn Weaver author of “Happy Wives Club” became fascinated about Green’s story and decided to write a biography about his life. She has plans to create a movie about this fascinating story which is a missing part of American History. A date hasn’t been given on the completion of this project but we are excited to hear about the new book. Her interview on The Breakfast Club stated she is honored to help write the narrative about such a remarkable hidden figure.

Fawn Weaver is not only a best selling author, she is a popular blogger and runs a savvy investment company specializing in real estate, tech, and branding. Her book “The Happy Wives Club”, includes interviews of women and couples with successful marriages of more than 25 years. She wanted to find the secrets of what makes a happy marriage. After listening to her audio book “Happy Wives Club” I was inspired by such a positive book. Even though I’m not currently married, I wish I could join her club. This book gives great wisdom from woman across the country and shows the importance of happy marriages. In the era of ratchet relationships displayed on TV, her book is refreshing and positive. I loved chapter 4, which interviews woman from Winnipeg, Canada. They explained how important it is to never meditate on negative thoughts. How not to dwell on them or they will grow and become destructive. This is a very powerful book written in 2004. I honestly think marriage should be a part of high school and college curriculum. Just think if girls and men were trained in sustaining healthy & happy marriages. Sounds corny but wouldn’t society benefit from simple teachings? What if?

Fawn Weaver has a very interesting legacy. Her father, Frank Wilson is a Motown legend. His songwriting and music production includes “LoveChild”, the Supremes number 1 hit “All I need”, and the Temptations “Castles in the Sand” by Stevie Wonder. Born 1940 in Houston, Frank Wilson attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. After being kicked out due to joining a civil rights protest he headed to Los Angeles, to fulfill his dreams of becoming a musician. And just like her father Weaver loves to write and is compelled to tell the story of Green.

George (Green’s Son)

Nathan “Nearest” Green was a kidnapped African who was forced to work for a slave owner named Dan Call. Green was born 1820 and was from Lynchburg, Tennessee and considered the first Master Distiller. After emancipation, Green continued to labor on the kidnapper’s land and taught Jack how to create Whiskey. Green’s son (George sits next to Jack Daniel in picture) is one of the only pictures of him in existence. An actual picture of Green is unavailable. Debbie Staples is a great granddaughter of Green and recently retired from working at the distillery but other descendants still work there. Fawn Weaver is helping to create a museum in Lynchburg that will honor Green. Her other projects include a beautification project of her newly purchased land that was the original Jack Daniel’s Distillery. Currently, a scholarship fund from the Nearest Green Foundation is available and a new crafted Whiskey called “Uncle Nearest 1856” is for sale online with physical purchase available in 12 states including Tennessee, Georgia, California and Kentucky. Asante’ to Fawn Weaver for continuing to thrive in business and helping to create new ventures by keeping Nathan “Nearest” Green legacy alive.
