The Most Anticipated Books of 2018

This year seems to be a great year for the culture. From movies (is anyone as excited to see Black Panther as I am??) to music (Drake and Nas are rumored to drop albums, to name a few) and TV (previews of Showtime’s The Chi look promising), the year definitely looks promising. On top of that, there are some great books that are guaranteed to be page-turners as well.

1. Thugs: Seven Wahida Clark (January 23, 2018)

Back with the latest installment in her wildly popular Thugs series, Wahida Clark returns with the continuing saga of sex, love and of course thugs. Trae and Tasha struggle to hold onto their marriage after his release from prison, while the rest of the gang battle their own personal demons. After going though hell and back with each other, multiple times, will these couples be able to hold on through the latest obstacles they face?

2. The Family Business 4 Carl Weber and LaJill Hunt (January 30, 2018)

The Duncans are back with more drama than ever in this latest installment of their family saga. After LC recovers from being shot, he and his wife Chippy decide to go back to Georgia to pay their families a “visit”. Orlando’s son’s mother Ruby and the Duncan’s enemy Vinnie are hell bent on seeking revenge on the family. Meanwhile a longtime friend comes back in the picture and causes friction between always feuding sisters Paris and London. This is sure to be another ride full of adventure with the Duncan family.

3. Barracoon: The Story of The Last Slave Zora Neale Hurston (May 8, 2018)

This book is the work of one of the greatest writers ever published. In 1927, Hurston went to Plateau, Alabama and interviewed Cudjo Lewis, a ninety-five year old man who was the last surviving slave of the Atlantic slave trade from Africa. He tells Hurston about his past, from his childhood in Africa to the raid that led him to be captured to the years he spent in slavery until the Civil War ended. With so much history and shared knowledge from Lewis, combined with Hurston’s penmanship, this book promises to be a classic.

4. Creative Quest Quest Love (April 24, 2018)

Quest Love is the drummer for the Grammy –Award winning group The Roots. Using his own personal experiences and the advice he received from mentors (George Clinton) and collaborators (D’Angelo), plus other like minded artists, he shares how to tap into your creativity, ignore critics, and deal with the ups and downs of success.

5. When They Call You A Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandelle (January 16, 2018)

Patrisse Khan — Cullors is one of the founders of the Black Lives Matter Movement. In her memoir, she reflects on life experiences that she and others have survived which drove them to start Black Lives Matter. Often called terrorists, she shares why she is just the opposite of that and her hopes to change the way society views innocent black lives.
