A disturbing new report, the 2025 U.S. State of the Birds, finds that the U.S. bird population is still declining at an alarming rate. The report was compiled by an alliance of leading science and conservation organizations and released at the 90th annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. It documents continued widespread declines in American bird populations across all mainland and marine habitats. It finds that 229 species require urgent conservation action, even as the current White House administration eases some key habitat and bird protection laws.
The 2025 U.S. State of the Birds report points to habitat loss and climate change as major reasons for the decline. This report follows up on the 2019 study documenting the alarming loss of three billion birds across North America over 50 years (read more here).
