49 of the 50 states in America have a definite date to issue the removal of mask mandates. This would result in shoppers without masks, employees without masks, and, in fact, students without masks. Although masks have been highly recommended in places of work and schools, they are not required, motivating citizens to finally enjoy the freedom of breathing fresh air without a barrier in between. However, the majority of students have not been used to this new-normal world without masks and a widely spreading pandemic. Therefore, masks should still be required in educational institutes.

The COVID-19 pandemic is still spreading rapidly among the people of America. In addition to this, there are new variants on the attack, including the recent Omicron variant. The worst part is that COVID-19 vaccinations are not as effective against these variants. Even with the booster vaccines that are being rapidly injected, people can still be infected with these deadly variants if not careful.

Studies have shown that COVID-19 vaccinations are not effective amongst the population under the age of 12. This is due to the smaller dosage that children receive, reducing the vaccinations’ efficacies. Moreover, younger children have an immune system that works differently from people above the age of 12, so these vaccines initially made for adults may not work on younger children.

With the COVID-19 virus still on a rampage and lowering vaccination efficacies in children, the removal of mask mandates is definitely a cause for concern in schools. Students have to be in classrooms that are tightly packed with children, which can easily lead to the spread of the virus even if just one student is infected. Moreover, the students that get the virus from school can infect their families, leading to an even greater spread of COVID-19. For the well-being of our citizens in light of this pandemic, masks should be mandated at least in schools to control the spread of the coronavirus.
