I Refuse to Let Haters Dent My Joy this Pride Month

But it is making me reluctant to talk about my experiences in public

Pride 2023 was a pivotal year for me, mostly because it was my first as an out aspec. I’d spent the previous eight or so months soul searching and trying to understand so many past experiences within the demisexual framework. And it came to be that Pride Month gave me the pride and joy that I needed to fully accept my experiences.

But it also presented me with the abject hatred directed at the asexual community as a group. When ace campaigner Yasmin Benoit posted a pic of herself on Twitter with a caption that called on the British government to add asexuality protection to The Equality Act (2010), I wasn’t prepared for the sheer volume of negative comments. Leaving aside the racism and those objectifying her body, it became clear just how much hate is directed at our community.

The usual accusations of “child groomer” were there. Let me take an aside to ask what exactly aces are supposedly grooming children into doing — not having…
