Los Cabos: The Sweet Spot on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula
Anyone who knows me knows I adore Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. I’ve spent a lot of time there and have made spending my winters there a reality. Why do I love it so much? Well, it has everything I want: sunny skies, warm waters, and white sand beaches on not one but TWO oceans (the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez), delicious food, a cool community of people, a great music scene, nature, and the many outdoor activities.
Located at the tip of a 1,000-mile-long peninsula, Los Cabos comprises two towns, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, which are connected via a 20-mile corridor of sandy beaches. Cabo San Lucas is rowdier and best known for its nightlife and trendy resorts.
San Jose del Cabo, the less-crowded sister city of Cabo San Lucas, is a cultural hot spot with a plethora of cool little restaurants and art galleries that have opened up in recent years.
Some of my favorite things to do include visiting “The Arch,” a landmark in the area that you can either kayak or paddleboard to, which is always fun.
I also love Cabo Pulmo, an amazing reef approximately an hour from Cabo. This protected area is excellent for water activities and is one of my favorite places to dive. From bait balls to bull sharks and everything in between, you’ll love the excitement of The Cape’s underwater world.
The Parroquia San José Mission Church, which dates back to the 1730s, is a must-see and is located in downtown San Jose del Cabo, about 30 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, very close to the airport.
There are a few new “rancherías” nearby where you can live the experience of being a “Cowboy” and make regional cheese and other dishes. You can also take a dip into the thermal waters and watch the Milky Way at night.
What To Do
Some of my favorite things to do in Los Cabos include:
- Surfing the Pacific side at any number of surfing beaches along the coast
- Sailing the southern coast for some of the best sunsets you’ll ever see
- Enjoying local gourmet food at one of the numerous restaurants around town
- Relaxing on the beach
- Horseback riding along the sandy beaches
- Kayaking the pristine waters
- ATV touring through sandy moonscapes
- Road tripping from dry desert to sea
- Whale watching, especially during February and March
- Checking out cool art in the historic art district
- Birdwatching in San Jose’s Estuary and Bird Sanctuary
- Snorkeling in Cabo Pulmo Marine Park
- Fishing
Where to Eat
There are so many great restaurants to eat at in this area that you are bound to find a favorite of your own. However, Flora Farms is a must. What a great gastronomic experience! I love the fresh and delicious food served up in a gorgeous garden setting. Try the roasted corn soup and pork shoulder.
Where to Stay
You can easily find a cool Los Cabos Hotel, and many U.S. airports have direct flights into/out of Cabo San Lucas (CSL) or Los Cabos (SJD) airports.
I personally like to stay at the Cabo Surf Hotel. The Cape, a Thomson Hotel, welcomes you with a bottle of tequila on arrival, and they have a cool rooftop bar with live music.
