The breakfast rush was over and Yulia was beginning to relax. She had taken pleasure in smiling at people and telling them her name. She was relieved not to have been assigned to working behind the scenes.

There had been panic earlier when a member of kitchen staff had cut themselves. She was asked if she had first aid training and had shaken her head vigorously. She could see that it was a serious cut — and that the two or three people in attendance were having trouble stemming the flow of blood.

When someone was asked to go to the desk and tell Giovanni to call the doctor, Yulia felt herself turning faint. She must have looked on the point of collapse because the kitchen manager told her to go outside and breathe some fresh air.

She had been happy to do so and was leaning back against the wall beside the hotel’s main door when Gibson had arrived. Yulia immediately felt better knowing that medical attention was on the scene. There had been nothing in…
