Dennis Goes to the Zoo
It was about 7 in the morning, or maybe quarter to,
When Dennis woke up and shouted,
“We’re going to the Zoo!”
He was the most excited bear there ever could be,
Because he was off to the zoo to see lions and tigers and the chimpanzees.
He washed his face and behind his ears,
He looked at the clock, the time was near,
So he made his breakfast- porridge and honey,
Then suddenly thought, “the zoo has a gift shop. I need some money!”
So to his piggy bank he went and got 55p,
He could not wait to see the lions, the tigers, and the chimpanzees.
The journey was short, just a car ride away,
It was out of the town, near the fields that blossom in May,
As they came to a stop Dennis let out a squeak,
“We’re off to see lions and tigers, and the chimpanzees”.
Dennis ran through the entrance, so fast he nearly lost his hat,
He ran to the sign that said, ‘The Jungle Cats’
He ran past the sign, and up to where they were enclosed,
He looked through the window, pressing so that he squished his nose,
“Where are they?” He thought, “are they trying to hide?”
But then alas! He saw them, there in their pride,
There was the Dad at the front, he had the mane,
The rest following like the carriages of a train,
There was a mummy, a daughter, and a couple of cousins,
And then came the brothers, it made about a dozen.
The lions ran around, all playing with each other,
All of the sisters and cousins and brothers,
But the time was going, it was ticking on,
Dennis wanted to see more animals before he was gone,
So out of the Lions enclosure went he,
As he still had to see the Tigers and the little Chimpanzees.
The Tigers were brilliant, most easily seen,
They had stripes all over, black and an orangey tangerine,
There were only two, a Mum and a Daughter,
They were eating their lunch, right by the water,
“What an idea!” Said the little Bear,
And he pulled out his lunch and ate it right there.
After his food went down, it was a quarter to three,
Bang on time to visit the Chimpanzees!
The Chimp house was close, just to the right,
In fact he could see all the Chimps in sight,
They were cavorting around, playing on swings,
Bouncing all over on all sorts of things,
One was picking his nose, one was holding a ball,
Another was just doing nothing at all.
After an hour of watching it was time to head off,
But not before he visited the Zoo Keeper Gift Shop.
Into the entrance he went and he looked everywhere,
“What shall I buy?” Said the small bear,
There were pencils and notepads, and cuddly toys,
They were some gifts for girls, and some gifts for boys,
Dennis went to his pocket and got all the money he took,
And he bought himself an animal picture book.
After he went to the car, and slept all the way,
He slept past the town and the fields that blossom in May,
He dreamt all the journey, he was as happy as could be,
He dreamt about Lions and Tigers,
and of course the Chimpanzees.
