Currency of Attention

One of the most important currencies of today is our attention. I think it is critical to create spaces to see and connect with each other. The world is packed full of people who have great ideas on how we can shift things. I see this as a way to serve in the transformation of our systems, our culture, and our consciousness. Our diversity gives us strength.

Are you a changemaker, entrepreneur, or an advocate? You’ll see some suggested ‘recipes’ for creating content that you can share with your networks — and the world — to help us all to better understand what we are up to and how we see the challenges of our times. The method is to be genuine, ask the natural questions as they arise, and help us guide each other in sharing what we are up to.

I think that recorded and shared conversations can help coordinate the scale of change that is needed. I think we need to connect our intelligence, and not of the artificial kind: we need to have sensible conversations that include the very real and daunting scale of challenge we face.

Here’s a bit the philosophy so you know where I’m coming from. User generated content has changed the landscape of social media, but as yet all of that data is not really owned by the creators. I believe that representations of each person’s voice and image are integral to their identity, and that we should all have the agency to decide what happens to those digital artifacts that represent us. There is no clarity around that. People like Daniel Harris at Kendraio are creating systems where we could have way more agency with our media, but as yet those systems have not been widely adopted.

Here are some examples of some pieces we’ve done, so you can get a sense of the kind of media that we’re creating.

Check out this piece introducing Daniel Harris of Kendra.io and Arthur Brock of the Metacurrency Project, Ceptr, and the Holochain. They’re awesome. We met at the Impact Economy Summit in Whistler BC, an event put together by Caroline Smalley of The Citizens Media and I3 Coop. You can check out some of the podcasts we made then on the I3 Youtube channel.

And here’s a piece with Sam Hahn. Sam has been developing ‘Collaborology’, a series of protocols and practices that we can use to co-evolve human systems to be able to collaborate together at a global level. We’ve learned a lot from each other and will continue to develop content as each of our work progresses.

And here’s a short piece from the inspiring Selma van Halder. She is a fellow alumni of Groundswell, an alternative business school for social entrepreneurs in Vancouver. If you are in Vancouver, and have an idea of project you would like to bring to life, we encourage you to join the program this fall!

Thanks for reading, sharing, and doing the good work you are doing in the world. We think that the more we help each other, the more powerful we are as a movement.
