P.S. Sorry for not uploading yesterday… I was at a party and — you know what, I’m not going to tell this story…

Today’s word is petrichor, which is an absolutely gorgeous noun used to describe the refreshing smell after a rainstorm. It definitely has connections to the word ichor, which we will look at now.

Looking Deeper

petrichor is actually quote a modern word. First used by Aussie scientist Richard Grenfell Thomas in 1964. petrichor itself is made of the prefix ‘petri’ which means ‘relating to stone’ + ‘ichor’ which is the literal blood of the gods in Greek mythology! Wow!

Today this word is used scientifically too, but it’s still a beautiful noun to have around in case we need to precisely coin that niche. (The earthly scent is actually created by geosmin, by the way.)

Using ‘petrichor’ in a Seentence

Instead of using the phrase ‘the smell of rain’ or ‘the earthly smell’, petrichor is viable in some cases

“Other than the petrichor coming from the window, there wasn’t any sign of rainfall.”
