Quiet? Silence? Sense? Hmm…

Today’s word is quiescence, which means the state of being quiet and motionless. I can spot a hint of the word quiet and even the word essence in there. Hmm, the essence of quietude? (yes, quietude is a word)

Looking Deeper

quiescence’s Latin root quiescentia simply means ‘resting’. And *drumroll* this word has no other cousins in other ancient languages. Cool!

Today we see this word in microbiology textbooks with it having the definiton of the ‘period of time when a cell is in a term of no growth and no division’. It also has uses in entomology(the study of insects) and refers to the temporal slowing of a bug’s metabolism in response to negative environments.

Using ‘quiescence’ in a Sentence

Don’t be afraid to use this word out of it’s common scientific textbook habitat! quiescence is not considered jargon and is fit for daily usage. (without annoying your friends too much) Here:

The quiescence of the night is so soothing!

To its defence, quiescence is still seeing a decent amount of use in books. Unfortunately, that is changing as more mundane words like ‘still’ or ‘quiet’. If you don’t feel comfortable in using quiescence in spoken conversations, use it in sentences by replacing some of its overpopulated counterparts.

See you tomorrow!

I know I might not be much, but I hope to bring these words back to our use again. By sharing one word a day, maybe we still have a shot at saving them.
