Bloomberg reports that OpenAI will meet with representatives from major Hollywood film and TV studios and other industry executives to promote the use of Sora, its video-generating AI

A little over a month ago, OpenAI surprised with the announcement of Sora, its new artificial intelligence for generating hyper-realistic videos of up to one minute with just a text description. The technology is not yet available to the general public, although the startup promises that access will be made available later this year. But Sam Altman’s people are not wasting any time and want this tool to quickly gain a foothold in Hollywood.

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI will meet next week with representatives of major film and TV studios, representation agencies and other industry executives to promote the use of Sora in future productions. The meetings are part of a strategy to try to persuade the industry about the advantages and benefits of the application.

OpenAI has already given access to Sora to a very limited group of top directors and actors, according to the media report. The intention is to test the waters to see what kind of acceptance this technology would have in the films and series that could be coming in the next few years. This is in addition to a demonstration that Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer of the Californian firm, reportedly gave in Hollywood last February, and the recent presence of Sam Altman at some parties with artists and other members of the industry during the weekend of the 2024 Oscars.

The report does not specify which studios or executives will participate in meetings with OpenAI about the potential use of Sora in their productions. Still, it stands to reason that this artificial intelligence tool is already generating a lot of interest—for better or worse—in the entertainment industry.

OpenAI wants Sora to make his way in Hollywood

Creating highly detailed clips from a simple text description could change the way films and series are made. That’s not to say that Sora or OpenAI aspire to replace principal photography or anything like that. But they could streamline secondary shooting jobs as a complement to existing visual effects (VFX) tools.

Let’s take a rather silly example to understand where Sam Altman and company might be aiming. Today, if a production team wants to shoot an aerial shot over a cliff at a certain time of day, they have to coordinate several elements. From hiring a helicopter to transport the cameras and cameraman, to coordinating insurance, shooting schedules, and rescheduling in case of bad weather, to name just a few. Something similar would apply if the scene was shot using a film drone and a professional pilot.

With the help of Sora, OpenAI would make it possible to create that same shot completely artificially. And in a matter of minutes. In addition, filmmakers could tell the AI the time of day, weather conditions, lighting, and a host of other parameters that may be out of their control on a real shoot. Such a tool applied in an industry like film and TV can be a game changer.

Marques Brownlee recently did an interesting analysis of what OpenAI can achieve with Sora. The YouTuber said that such an AI could revolutionize—and/or kill—the stock video industry. An observation that seems very accurate, and one that Sam Altman’s team has probably had in mind from the start. However, taking this tool to Hollywood shows that the strategy is even more ambitious than we might think.

The use of generative AI in film and TV has already been the focus of conflict. The arrival of this technology in the industry was one of the many triggers of the Hollywood actors’ and screenwriters’ strikes in 2023. It stands to reason that promoting the use of Sora in major productions could win OpenAI a number of detractors. We will follow the issue closely.
