Author Big Mike, a known collector infamous for his multi-million dollar basketball card collection — might be new to writing blogs, but he’s no rookie when it comes to sports card collecting. Mike’s collection of high-end basketball cards has been featured on Television, YouTube, in the news and will be on display in an upcoming documentary on sports cards set to be released later this year.

Writing under the pseudonym “Big Mike’s Sports Cards” Mike, who has always preferred to remain anonymous — has started his own blog. Getting insight from a collector that’s been adding high dollar pieces long before the sports card craze should be invaluable. We’re definitely excited about it. You can follow Mike’s blog here.

You can imagine our surprised when named as one of the “best place to buy basketball cards online” in 2022. It’s always nice to be recognized for your hard work, even being mentioned with some of the bigger dealers is a huge honor for us.

We don’t do anywhere near the volume as other dealers and we haven’t been in business as long as most of them. But we simply focus on Customer service, quality products and building relationships in our particular niche — the High-End, Premium & Ultra-Premium basketball card market.

We have shared the original article below for our readers:

The Best Places To Buy Individual Sports Cards , Hobby Boxes, Live Breaks & High-End Cards — 2022

What Sport or Genre Should I Begin With?

The best advice that I can give someone that’s new to collecting sports cards, or considering Collecting, is to first start out with your favorite sport or genre.

Start With Interests Instead of Chasing Dollar Signs

It’s been my experience that by starting out focusing on something that you actually enjoy — rather than chasing dollar signs or hoping to land a huge pull from a hobby box in a sport that you don’t even follow — you’ll get much more enjoyment out of the hobby.

If you’re only interested in the hobby because you’re looking to strike it rich” you’ll most likely only grow frustrated and decide to quit within the 1st year.

Million Dollar Sports Cards

Many new to the hobby make the decision to begin collecting after seeing the headlines in the news. Headlines like: a Mike Trout sold for a record-setting $3.93 million at auction, or a Luka Doncic rookie sells for $4.6 million on the star’s 22nd birthday.

But it’s important to understand that the chances of pulling a million dollar card is extremely rare. That’s why they’re million dollar cards. If they were in every other box, we’d all be rich.

That Being Said, There Were 11 basketball cards that sold for over $1 million in 2021

Before we get into the benefits, let’s first discuss the reasons that sports card collecting may not be for you.

Reasons NOT To Start Collecting Sports Cards

Believe it or not there’s regular everyday people like you and me who’s lives have been ruined by becoming addicted to sports card collecting. I know what you’re thinking.. an addiction to sports cards? Really? Obviously there’s no physical dependency like with drug addiction and no one experiences withdrawal symptoms from giving up sports cards.

But, there are many who have become addicted to the thrill of the chase — opening expensive products, buying into live or group breaks and investing money they shouldn’t — in search of that massive hit for a huge payday. The thrill of pulling a huge card releases the exact same chemicals in the brain — as any other addiction — dopamine and serotonin. No different than gambling.

History of Addiction, Impulsive Behavior & Addictive Personalities

Those who’ve become addicted have went on to spend thousands, hundreds of thousands in some cases — chasing the illusion of pulling a million dollar sports card. Others have gambled with money they couldn’t afford to lose on expensive products, experienced gambler’s fallacy and think because they didn’t get anything good — were due for a big hit in the next one. To put this into perspective, some of the higher end sports card hobby boxes can cost $10–$20,000 with 8–10 cards inside.

That being said, if you don’t haven’t struggled with substance abuse or gambling in the past, don’t have addictive tendencies and you enjoy the sport or genre you’re considering start collecting — you’re in the right place.

SPORTS CARD MARKET WORTH $13 BILLION IN 2019 — ESTIMATED 100 BILLION BY 2027

According to Verified Market Research the trading card industry was worth $13 billion in 2019, and could be upwards of $100 billion by 2027. Trading cards are not just a family affair — for many, in addition to the nostalgia and joy in collecting — it’s also viewed as an investment.

From a 1953 Mickey Mantle, a 1986 Michael Jordan to a rare Mike Trout rookie card, to soccer, UFC, and even passionate Pokemon card collectors are feeding the resurgence in the hobby.

THE BEST PLACES TO BUY SPORTS CARDS ONLINE 2022

1. eBay

The oldest and biggest online marketplace and auction site is a great place to start your search for whatever it is you’re looking for in terms of baseball cards, other sports cards, and sports memorabilia of all kinds.

Although eBay began as an all-auction platform, today it offers up buy-it-now offers and seller stores featuring items you can buy at sticker price.

With thousands and thousands of sellers, it’s usually pretty likely that you can find what you need in some form or another.

The drawbacks to buying on eBay include dealing with sellers yourself, especially if something goes wrong; sometimes hefty shipping and handling fees; hassles should you need to make a return; and difficulties finding really unusual items.

Still, all in all, eBay remains a rock star when it comes to buying baseball cards online.
