For most, it’s a combination of the three.
For those that have followed us for any length of time, followed our card recommendations, and especially those that picked up some of the cards featured in any of our previous monthly “best buys” articles — you know that we’ve pulled in some huge profits — all while having some fun with the hobby and even building our personal collections (PC) to hold for the long term.

For our new readers — a quick backstory: How this once forgotten yet beloved pastime for many of us that grew up in the 90’s (sports card collecting) has grown into a multi-billion dollar market.

SPORTS CARD MARKET ON “INSANE” RUN
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the sports card industry has seen an unprecedented boom. As COVID-19 swept across the United States, one by one professional and collegiate sports fell by the wayside. Filling the void for sports fans became the next challenge. Many fans filled that void by rediscovering sports card collecting.
Sports card collecting is having a run not seen since the 1970s and 1980s. This year saw sales of sports cards at public auction reach all-time highs. Over ten cards sold for $500,000 or more.
MULTIMILLION DOLLAR SPORTS CARD SALES
Two basketball cards sold for $1.8 million each, a Lebron James rookie card and a Giannis Antetokounmpo rookie card. 2020 also saw a 2009 Mike Trout baseball card sell at auction for a record-breaking $3.84 million.
With sports cards growing in value, many collectors are amassing collections of high value as part of a diversified investment portfolio. What separates this era from the previous is the recognition that these cards are a legitimate alternative asset.

SHOULD I BUY ROOKIES? REFRACTORS? OR BOTH?
Typically we recommend key rookies of future & current Hall of Famers, as these hold the most value over time. Second and third year cards can be a decent option for those looking to flip for short term profits, but years down the road, it’s always the rookies that will be worth the most. With that being said, Michael Jordan and possibly LeBron James are the exception. This week our recommended buys are Michael Jordan refractors.
MICHAEL JORDAN ROOKIE CARDS VS MICHAEL JORDAN REFRACTORS
As most of Jordan’s rookie cards take off into the stratosphere (and out of most collector’s budgets) it is our belief that collectors and investors alike will be looking for realistic options to add the greatest basketball player of all time to their portfolio. Most would prefer to do so without having to sell their houses. And the first place that many will look will be to Michael Jordan refractor cards.
Once this happens — due to the scarcity and extremely low pop count of most of Jordan’s refractors — these cards should surge to incredible heights.
Most Jordan refractors are still within a reasonable price range, but with an increase in demand and pop counts of 40–150 — -their simply won’t be enough to satisfy demand — causing prices to skyrocket. Get in where you fit in while you still can. Jordan refractors are preparing for launch.

Many of the cards listed for sale online and especially on ebay are reprints. These are becoming harder to spot as fraudulent sellers have upped their games. Reprints are simply copies of original versions of the card. Many times the cards sold online are copies of the original or just outright fakes (shitty attempts at reprints).
Reprints hold no value (that’s why you see some cards that you’d think would be worth a lot of money selling online for so cheap. Obviously fake cards aren’t worth anything. Originals hold value and obviously rookies, autographed cards, rare inserts, short prints (cards that are numbered on the actual card itself) are worth much more and are only increasing in value.
Everything listed on on our site is Authentic, Rookie, Autographed or both. This also includes rare, limited edition, short-print and low numbered cards (some 1 of 1’s) that can’t be found anywhere else.
