Adaptations are as difficult as to pull off as math probably is for the Hulk. And when the adaptation is based on decades upon decades of continuity (retconned or otherwise)? That’s comparable to the Jolly Green Giant smashing the math test into oblivion (so far as a piece of paper can be smashed).
Such is nearly always the risk when adapting superhero content for the screen. Movies and TV shows alike must perform a balancing act: How close to stay to the original? What is “the original” in the first place? Are certain storylines and characters better suited to this particular adaptation than others? What actors can best portray those storylines and characters? How “off-script,” per se, can (or should) the adaptation go? Are completely original storylines and characters warranted? How best to broadly satisfy the established fanbase? Do these questions ever end? Are people who adapt established stories and characters for a living sane? Do I need to mention Game of Thrones?
