2014 TAC Tweet of the Year
We chose this tweet for 3rd place because we’ve all been here before and heard this same exact introduction at church. And, of course, we’ve all thought the same thing afterwards. Well played, Peeves.
This tweet was chosen because at the time, “Rachel Held Evans II” was new to the Parody world. Even RHE herself didn’t know she had a parody until March 31, 2014. Somebody retweeted this tweet thinking it was the real RHE and the retweets just took off.
After the surge of retweets, the real RHE had had enough and threatened to file a complaint with Twitter if the name was not changed. For a short time, “Rachel Held Evans II” went away, but she’s back now as “Fake Rachel.”
This tweet has a well-deserved 2nd spot because it really defines what TAC parodies are all about.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, CHURCH ANONS AND CHURCH PARODIES…
Some jokes are purely fiction. Some are based in reality. Then you get some that are a brilliant hybrid between truth and fiction. Better yet, based around a contentious current event. TAC selected this as 2014 Tweet of the Year because it perfectly encapsulates the frustrations of many Christians when a Houston mayor demanded that pastors provide sermons and sermon material to see if they had breached 501(c)(3) regulations. It was a great blend of fiction and reality—and that’s our favorite kind of humor.
After he mailed off a copy of the Bible, it wasn’t long before the mayor decided to tone down her rhetoric. Nobody messes with Pastor Church Norris. Nobody.
