Hi,
Please give me a definite starting point if I want to learn formal Arabic (Fusha).
Thanks

This is our reply:

Hello there,

So, as promised, here are the best resources in which we believe they will give you a solid foundation in learning MSA then progressing to Fusha, your targeted language. To learn the difference between the two please hit the link.

Based on the foundational program Arabic for religious purposes, we recommend the following, ranked from the best to the better:

Offline materials (Books)

  1. Arabic between (at) your hands series
  2. Modern Standard Arabic Grammar
  3. Alkitab Alasasi
  4. Medina Arabic series
  5. The book: Learn to read Quran
  6. Any Quran interpretation in your mother tongue with The Quran being writing in Arabic

Online materials

  2. http://www.learnarabiconline.com
  3. Learn Arabic with Maha YouTube series

Where to purchase:

Amazon.com and Noorart — learn Arabic books for adults

We use these exact offline resources (among others) for our students who study this program , however, we do not have to follow any of which back to back, just what they need.

You probably wonder how and why we come with this list for you and on what grounds, so here is our analysis of your case:

As a learner, you are an Eastern Learner and it is most likely that you are an advanced learner too. What do mean by being an Eastern Learner? The short answer is here, the facts that your mother tongue is Kurdish and you lived or still living in Iraq are playing a significant role in determining your Arabic-learning capabilities.

The long answer is in this link.

As you wish to learn Fusha, the best resources are The Holy Quran and the pre-Islamic era literature, based on what we understood of your level, we are recommending that you start at the foundational level, so the pre-Islamic literature is post pointed for a later stage. Learn more about the foundational level from here.

The single foundational program that matches these requirements among ours is Arabic for religious purposes program as president for the Eastern Learner. Here is the skills distribution of this program:

instructional language and distribution of language skills of the foundational program: Arabic for religious purposes

These are the skills that you need to focus on in any program that you’re committing to. Additionally, you must only use formal Arabic (MSA and Fusha) as an instructional language. Ask your provider to provide you with a similar sheet upon registrations.

Other programs that we highly recommend are:

Arabic for reading and writing
Media Arabic
Arabic for religious purposes -Shiat dialects

You can find the equivalent in many offline and online resources as we as blogs and websites. Only focus on choosing the keywords that matching these titles. For example, instead of searching for “Arabic book”, type “Media Arabic books”.

Since you are learning on your own, there isn’t much to provide regarding your track nor your budget, so it’s naturally going to be a self-paced track. Here is a link that explains what we mean by the self-paced track.

Ideally and to get the best out of this track, your tutor dependency should range from 1% — 30% during your studies. So 70% or more is on you, meaning, you plan for your schedule, content/learning consumption, content mastery, homework completion, deadlines and so on. Only when you get stuck in grammar or phonetics for example, or that you want to practice your language with someone knowledgeable, you call for a tutor.

Follow this blog on Medium as we have a very detailed content agenda on how to get the best out of each track.

Here you have it! A list of resources customized for your goal of learning Fusha. Feel free to change any element you wish if you think that our assumptions were not in the right place.

We do these steps for any learner who seeks customized program at our school as we follow what we call, the PTP framework ©. We believe that it is one of the best application of the researches done by our R&D and EVERYBODY should benefit from these findings too.
