Francis Annagu — project creator, documentary photographer and creative writer (based in Nigeria) invites participants to take part in creating a new work for online exhibition (on Co-iki’s website) under the “Creativity from HOME” experimental residency curated by Co-iki.
フランシス・アンナグはナイジェリアを拠点に活動するドキュメンタリー写真家でありクリエイティブ・ライターです。
この度、アンナグは東京のクリエイターレジデンスco・iki（こいき）の実験的リモートレジデンシー”Creativity from HOME”の参加クリエイターとして実施するオンライン展示作品における参加者を募集します。

This call for participants is aimed at encouraging multi-narrative and multi-cultural engagements by people from diverse communities/prefectures and cultural backgrounds in Japan and around the world.
この度の参加者募集は、日本や各国の異なる文化背景や土地、コミュニティの人たちの多文化的、また多様な語りや物語を通した関わりを促進し、ともに創り出すことを目的としています。
In this project, we want you to tell us the ‘other’ narratives of floras, particularly delving into their ‘strange meanings’ and what they incorporate in terms of our inter-personal relationships, our individual memories, our interactions with flowers, seeds and plants, and our historic origins. By ‘strange flowers’ we mean those flowers that have deeper meanings and representations other than their known or popular interpretations.
このプロジェクトでは、植物相についての「奇妙な意味合い」を掘り下げ、
植物と個々人の関係性や記憶、花や種・植物との関わり方や歴史的な起源などがどのように参加者の皆さんの体験とつながっているのか、植物の（これまでイメージされてきたものとは別の）「第三の」物語をともに探索し、また語っていただければと考えています。
For example, the Canna flowers are popular for wedding ceremonies but one of it’s ‘strange meanings’ is that it symbolises healing and cure from physical illnesses. It’s also superstitiously connected to magical powers. But we want you to tell us your narrative in a short video whilst showing your flora in photographs.
例えば、ナイジェリアやアフリカ大陸で生息する「カナ・フラワー」は結婚式などの席でも良く使われる花ですが、同時に病気などを治す治癒のシンボルでもあるという（前段でいうところの）「奇病な意味合い」があります。
また、この花は迷信的にも不思議なパワーがあるとされています。
参加者のみなさんには好きな植物の写真を撮って、その意味するところをご自身の個人的意味合いや「奇妙な意味合い」についてビデオでも語っていただきクリエイターであるフランシス・アンナグに送ってもらえればとおもいます。

The presence of art, inspiration and improvisation of this artistic process are essential. The interaction between the different perspectives creates a mutually productive space for both the project creator and curator and the participants. Every participant would be given the opportunity to share their experiences in the creation process through a one-on-one conversation with Francis Annagu.
For this reason, eight (8) participants would be chosen to share with us ‘strange narratives’ of floras that deviate from popular meanings or representations, using multimedia in images and videos. Participants are expected to show their part of the story in images and a short video where they tell us about the flora(s).
この作品での創造的プロセスにおいては、アートやインスピレーション、また即興性が必要不可欠です。様々な視座をもった人たちによるやりとりや交流は、クリエイターやキュレーターまた参加者など、お互いにとって生産的な場を創り出します。
全てのプロジェクト参加者の方はプロジェクト企画者であるフランシス・アンナグとの1対1の対話を通して、ご自身の体験を創作の過程で共有する機会もあります。
これらの企画目的を踏まえ、8人の方にご参加いただき、ビデオや写真等のマルチメディアを用いて、世間一般の植物の意味合いや表象とは逸脱するような「奇妙な意味合い」をともに共有できればとおもいます。
参加の方にはご自身の植物相に関する物語の一面を撮影したビデオや写真で見せていただき、オンライン展示することになります。
Project brief
(Un)forgotten Flora
(Un)forgotten Flora delves into the politics of plants and explores systems of meaning that have been impressed upon nature, flora, and seeds throughout eras of imperialism and globalization. It pushes us to reconsider common perceptions and representations about nature ‘having always been there,’ being ‘neutral’ or ‘passive,’ when instead plants embody the larger history and are integral actors in it. This project investigates historical gaps and the economic and diplomatic implications of nature’s uses and Tokyo’s flora exchange flow patterns.
Looking at history through the perspective of nature, the artist in (Un)forgotten Flora shares counter official narratives around flora, drowning us in an abundance of ‘strange flowers.’ Despite the plants’ beauty, our unease reminds us that beyond relations of power, nature’s circulation routes take us back to our relationship with the land and have an impact on our origins, collective and individual memories, and survival.
プロジェクト概要
「(Un)forgotten Flora（忘れられた／ない 植物相）」
(Un)forgotten Flora（忘れられた／ない 植物相）では、植物にまつわる政治学を掘り下げ、帝国主義やグローバリゼーションの時代を通じて自然や植物相や種子に刻印されてきた意味の体系を探求します。
このプロジェクトによって私たちは、自然が「常にそこにあったもの」で「中立的」だったり「受動的」である、などという一般的な認識や表象を再検討するよう迫られるでしょう。植物はむしろ、より大きな歴史を具現化する、歴史にとっての不可欠な行為者なのです。
このプロジェクトでは、東京の植物相の交代や流れのパターン、植物の歴史的な差異や経済的・外交的な意味合いでどのように扱われてきたかを調査し明らかにします。
自然という観点から歴史を見ることで、(Un)forgotten Flora（忘れられた／ない 植物相）プロジェクトで私は植物相についての反・公的なナラティブ（語り）をシェアし、参加者を「奇妙な花」の豊かさにどっぷりと浸からせます。「奇妙な花」の美しさに、私たちは当惑し、その当惑によって思い出されるものがあります。権力関係を超えたところにある自然の循環回路は、私たちを大地との関係に連れ戻し、私たちの起源や、集団や個人の記憶、そして生存に影響を与えるのだと。
The Creation Process:
> Submit not more than 3 photos of one specific flora and you can include up to three floras;
> Record a 3 or 5 minute video, telling us the ‘strange narratives’ of the flora;
> To submit, upload your images and video on Dropbox and share the link on the Google form below;
Meanwhile, no professional art background is required from participants. We are interested in participants who want to create and share their stories with the world either in English or Japanese. The images and videos of the eight (8) participants would make up the completed project and the exhibition on Co-iki’s website. This will be accompanied by a 1,500-word essay summarizing the process and experiences with the participants.
作品創作・参加過程について
１．最大3種類までの植物（相）に取り組んでいただけます。1種類について写真3枚以内をお送りください。
２．ご自身が発見した植物の「奇妙な意味合い」について語って３～５分程のビデオメッセージとして撮影して送ってください。
３．これらの写真や動画についてはDropboxかGoogleフォーム等でアップロードしてクリエイターと共有いただければとおもいます。
Timeframe:
Please fill out the form on or before August 15th. Selected participants would be contacted on August 20th. Meanwhile, others would have the opportunity to follow up with the project and/or given a chance to be featured. During the period of the project, participants would have enough time to create their part of the project and interact with the project creator through various channels of open and ongoing communication.
