It’s one of those books you’ve likely heard of, but maybe haven’t gotten around to reading yet. It’s one of those books your spiritual friend recommended to you a year ago, but whose title you can’t recall. It’s a book whose simple yet powerful meaning can’t fully be felt until you read it yourself.

I’m referring, of course, to the popular and well-loved book The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. The above description was pretty much all I knew about The Alchemist before I purchased a copy of my own earlier this winter. Fittingly so, it was the first book I read in 2019 as a sort of reset into the new year.

You can find hundreds of lists on the Internet telling you why you should read this book and how its wisdom will positively influence you. Clearly, this is a book that deeply impacts its readers, sometimes in life-changing ways.

So, how can one book be so transformative?

I think it’s because whatever you’re going through, whatever you’re working toward, or whatever you’re seeking to find, The Alchemist has a universal message that will meet you where you are. As you follow Santiago (our protagonist, the shepherd) through villages and countries, his quest to find and fulfill his personal legend becomes your own journey, as well.
