Books are truly magical objects. They can take you on a journey to any place in the world without you having to leave the house. They can teach you crucial life lessons while you’re sitting on your sofa. Books can be a teleport; they can be a time machine. Books let us live hundreds of different lives and learn from thousands of situations that could’ve never happen to us.

But to get the most out of a book, you have to treat it a certain way. Books are unlike any other kind of media. No video, song, or movie requires the amount of time, commitment, and focus to consume. You have to give your full attention to a book to get something out of it. No valuable lessons can be taken and carved into your memory from skimming the pages or reading reviews online. Books simply can’t be hacked.

Because books are a little harder to digest than other media types, some people might think avid readers have some superpower. That you have to be born with a reading gene…
